According to a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO), alcohol is responsible for one in three deaths from injuries and violence in countries across Europe and Central Asia. Experts emphasize that the most common cases involve self-harm, road traffic accidents, and falls.

According to Karina Ferreira-Borges, WHO's regional advisor on alcohol, alcohol consumption not only contributes to the development of serious diseases, including seven types of cancer, but also significantly impairs behavioral control, reduces coordination and reaction time, leading to an increase in risky behaviors. This is why alcohol often becomes a cause of preventable injuries and fatalities.

Alcohol also remains one of the main factors contributing to violence and aggression. Its impact negatively affects not only consumers but also those around them, particularly women and children.

It is worth noting that official statistics do not fully reflect the real situation, as many cases go unnoticed due to stigma and fear of seeking help.

WHO expresses particular concern about the impact of alcohol on youth and adolescents, for whom it becomes a primary factor leading to disability and premature death, mainly due to injuries.

In this regard, WHO calls on governments in the region to take more active measures. Among the recommended actions are increasing taxes and prices on alcohol, restrictions on the time and places of its sale, control over alcohol advertising, as well as strengthening oversight of driving under the influence and implementing early detection programs for problematic alcohol use in medical institutions.

It was previously reported that alcohol can lead to dementia. In Kyrgyzstan, about 2,500 alcohol-related deaths are recorded annually. A former health minister proposed raising excise taxes and limiting the hours of alcohol sales.
