This temperature is the lowest recorded in the country for the current winter season, according to a statement from the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring published on Wednesday.

Weather forecast for January 22, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM:

Variable cloudiness is expected in the northern and other regions, with no precipitation predicted. The western part of the country will be affected by a westerly wind, while in other areas, the wind will blow from the northwest at a speed of 5-10 meters per second.

The temperature in the Darkhad basin and in the valleys of the Tes and Eröö rivers will range from -32 to -37 °C, while in the basin of Lake Uvs, Zavkhan, and the upper reaches of the Zag-Baidrag rivers, as well as in the valleys of the Idere, Eg, Uur, Orkhon, Selenge, Kharaa rivers and the confluence area of the Orkhon-Tuul rivers, the temperature will fluctuate from -26 to -31 °C.

In the Altai Mountains, the foothills of the Khangai Mountains, and the southwestern part of the Gobi, the temperature will be -8...-13 °C, in the eastern and northern parts of the Gobi -15...-20 °C, and in other areas -20...-25 °C.

In Ulaanbaatar, variable cloudiness without precipitation is forecasted, with a northwesterly wind at a speed of 2-7 meters per second, and the air temperature will range from -21 to -23 °C.

In most areas, the wind speed will be 4-9 meters per second, while in the Altai Mountains, Gobi, and steppes, it will reach 12-14 meters per second. The cold weather will ease in most places during the day, with temperatures from -38 to -43 °C at night and from -27 to -32 °C during the day in the area of Lake Uvs and the Darkhad basin, as well as in Zavkhan, the sources of the Zag-Baidrag, Idere, and Tes rivers, and in the Orkhon-Tuul delta.

In the mountainous areas of Khangai, Khövsgöl, and Khentii, as well as in the valleys of the Orkhon, Selenge, Kharaa, Eröö, Tuul, Terelj, Kherlen, Onon, Ulz, and Khalkh rivers, the temperature at night will drop to -31...-36 °C, and during the day will be -21...-26 °C. In the southern part of the Gobi, the temperature at night will reach -15–20 °C, and during the day -4–9 °C; in the northern part of the Gobi -20–25 °C at night and -9–14 °C during the day; in other areas -24–29 °C at night and -14–19 °C during the day.

Since last week, an extensive cold air mass from Siberia (Russia) has covered a significant part of Mongolia, causing a sharp drop in temperature.

Forecasts indicate that cold conditions will persist until Saturday, as reported by the agency, urging residents, especially nomadic herders and shepherds, to take precautions against possible disasters.

Winter in Mongolia is characterized by severe cold lasting for an extended period. Temperatures can vary from -25 °C to -45 °C.
