During the interview, Vance also expressed disagreement with the opinion of Pope Leo XIV, who claimed that President Donald Trump is trying to "destroy" the alliance between the U.S. and Europe in light of the conflict in Ukraine.
Noting that the Vatican represents a "diplomatic force acting for the common good," Vance characterized the Pope's opinion as "an especially Eurocentric approach to negotiations."
Vance emphasized: "We do not seek to destroy the European alliance and do not wish to sow discord among Europeans. In fact, our goal is to encourage Europe to become more self-sufficient."
