Trump stated that the US 'must' acquire Greenland after appointing a special envoy

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has been appointed as the U.S. special envoy to Greenland by President Donald Trump. In his statement, he promised to actively work towards making Greenland a part of the United States. This has provoked a negative reaction from Denmark, which governs Greenland as an autonomous territory.

On social media, the governor wrote: "Thank you, President Donald Trump! I am excited to serve you in this volunteer role and look forward to making Greenland a part of the USA." Trump, for his part, has repeatedly emphasized that he considers this Arctic island important for the country's security.
The appointment of Landry was announced on December 21, when Trump noted that he is aware of the significance of Greenland for national security and will represent Washington's interests.

This appointment underscores the U.S. position that Greenland is viewed as a separate entity, disconnected from Denmark, which has caused dissatisfaction among Danish authorities.

It is worth noting that the appointment is unofficial and does not require the consent of the host country, indicating Trump's persistent ambitions for control over Greenland.

Similar to his actions regarding Venezuela, this demonstrates Trump's desire to strengthen U.S. influence in the so-called "Western Hemisphere," encompassing all of America.

In 2019, Trump had already attempted to purchase Greenland; however, this proposal was rejected by both the Danish government and the Greenlandic government, which stated that "Greenland is not for sale."

Trump's decision to appoint a special envoy has sparked sharp condemnation in Denmark, and the country's authorities intend to summon the American ambassador for explanations.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed dismay over Washington's actions and warned of the need to respect Denmark's sovereignty.

"As long as there is a kingdom consisting of Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland, we cannot tolerate actions that violate our territorial integrity," the minister stated in an interview with TV2.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also emphasized that only the island's inhabitants have the right to decide its future, adding that other countries should respect its territorial integrity.

He noted that Greenland is open to cooperation with the U.S. and other states, but only on the basis of mutual respect.

"The appointment of a special envoy does not change our position. The future of Greenland is determined by us," Nielsen added, stressing that the island belongs to his people.

Upon returning to the White House, Trump renewed interest in Greenland, highlighting its strategic location and rich resources.

The president even hinted at the possibility of using force to achieve control over the island, which came as a shock to Denmark, a traditional NATO ally of the U.S.

With a population of about 57,000, Greenland has had extensive autonomy within the Danish kingdom since 1979, while foreign policy and defense issues are decided in Copenhagen.

Although many Greenlanders aspire to independence, most respondents reject the idea of joining the U.S.

The dispute over Greenland's fate has intensified against the backdrop of increasing competition for Arctic resources, as melting glaciers open new shipping routes and facilitate access to the region's mineral resources.

Greenland is also strategically important militarily, as the section of the Atlantic Ocean between it, Iceland, and the United Kingdom (known as the Faroese-Icelandic Gap or GIUK) is a key line of defense in the event of a potential conflict with Russia.
