The head of the White House staff stated that her harsh comments about Musk and Vance were taken out of context

On December 16, Vanity Fair published the first part of an extensive article based on numerous interviews with Suzy Wiles, the head of the White House staff. In this piece, Wiles describes Donald Trump as a person with the "personality of an alcoholic," Vice President JD Vance as a conspiracy theorist, and Elon Musk as a "notorious ketamine user." After the article was published, Wiles claimed that her words were taken out of context.

Wiles noted on her Twitter that Vanity Fair ignored important contexts, creating a "chaotic and negative narrative" about her administration.

Donald Trump, for his part, expressed support for Wiles after the article's release.

Wiles, 68, played a significant role in Trump's successful 2024 presidential campaign and became the first woman to hold the position of head of the White House staff.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Wiles discussed a wide range of issues, including the Epstein case, Trump's legal battles with political opponents, and his inner circle.

She also acknowledged that there might be an "element of revenge" in Trump's actions regarding criminal charges against opponents.

“I don’t think he wakes up thinking about revenge,” she added. “But if the opportunity arises, he will take it.”
Wiles is considered one of the most influential figures in Trump's administration.

Before leading the administration, Wiles worked closely with Trump, including managing his 2016 campaign in Florida and the fundraising organization Save America.

In the interview, she claims that she grew up in a family with an alcoholic father, which helped her work with the president.

“With high-functioning alcoholics, the personality especially manifests during drinking,” she said. “So I have some understanding of strong personalities.”

Although Trump does not drink, according to Wiles, he has the "personality of an alcoholic," and he runs the country with the confidence that "there is nothing he cannot do. Nothing, zero, nothing."

Trump also stated in an interview with the New York Post that Wiles is a great worker and suggested that the journalist may have misunderstood her.

Regarding the comment about the "personality of an alcoholic," Trump noted that Wiles might just be repeating his own words.

“I don’t drink; that’s known to everyone, but I often say that if I did drink, I might become an alcoholic. I’ve said that many times,” Trump explained.

Among other individuals mentioned by Wiles was JD Vance, who had previously criticized Trump but has now become a close ally and vice president.

Wiles noted that Vance's change of views could have been a "political" move.

Speaking to reporters, Vance noted that he had not read the article but believes only in "truthful" conspiracy theories, citing rumors about former President Joe Biden's health.

Wiles was particularly harsh in her comments about billionaire Elon Musk, who was involved in budget cuts in a government department but left Trump’s team in May. Following this, a public conflict occurred between Trump and Musk, with insults exchanged on social media.

Wiles characterized Musk as a "notorious ketamine user" and noted that he slept in a sleeping bag in the administration building near the White House.

“He’s a strange, strange person — like all geniuses, probably. It doesn’t help with work, but he is very independent,” Wiles added.

Speaking about specific budget cuts that Musk implemented, Wiles expressed dissatisfaction with the elimination of the U.S. Agency for International Development, USAID.

“I believe that anyone who has been interested in government work and has ever worked with USAID would agree with me that they did their job very well,” she explained.

“Musk approached this from a position of needing to react quickly. If you are a proponent of gradual change, you won’t launch a rocket to the Moon,” Wiles reflected. “With that approach, you will damage something. But no sane person can say that the process with USAID was normal. No one.”

In her tweet after the Vanity Fair article was published, Wiles called it a "dishonestly constructed piece" aimed against her and other members of Trump’s team.

“Important context was ignored, and much of what I and others said about the team and the president was taken out of context. I suspect this was done to create an extremely chaotic and negative narrative about the president and our team,” Wiles wrote.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, in response to a BBC inquiry, noted that Wiles contributed to the president "achieving the greatest successes among all American presidents in the first 11 months in office," adding that there is no more competent and loyal advisor than Wiles, and that the entire administration values her as a leader and supports her unanimously.

Levitt later also accused Vanity Fair of bias, stating that the magazine took Wiles' words out of context and ignored the opinions of other team members.
