Some popular pro-Israel and right-wing activists labeled him a Christian, although it has been established that he is a Muslim named Ahmed al-Ahmed, who came from Syria.
Al-Ahmed engaged the attacker with bare hands and managed to disarm him. Initially, the media reported him as the owner of a fruit shop in the shopping center where the attack occurred.
Conservative activist Laura Loomer, a Trump supporter, also spread misinformation, claiming that the hero was allegedly Lebanese or a Coptic Christian, urging people not to believe reports of his Muslim identity. A similar statement was made by another blogger, Eyal Jacobi, who called him a Maronite Christian.
However, both versions were debunked. Ahmed's cousin, Mustafa al-Ahmed, confirmed to Australian media that he is a practicing Muslim from the Syrian province of Idlib. This information was also corroborated by friends and community representatives.
Social media users noted that the refusal to recognize the Muslim as a hero reflects the entrenched Islamophobia in right-wing circles. Instead of acknowledging the bravery of a man who risked his life to save others, there was an attempt to alter his identity to suit ideological agendas.
This incident illustrates a broader trend in which the heroism of Muslims is often downplayed or ignored, while crimes involving them are emphasized. The events at Bondi Beach serve as an indicator of digital distortion of reality.
