An alcohol store for foreigners has opened in Saudi Arabia

According to Euronews, this decision was not publicly announced, and information about the store was passed among foreigners from word to mouth. As a result, many people are now eager to visit this establishment.

The store began operations for diplomats back in January 2024, but it is now also opening for other foreigners, not belonging to Islam, who hold a "premium-class" residence permit. Such documents are issued to valuable specialists and investors.

At the same time, each customer undergoes a sobriety check, and the use of mobile phones and cameras is strictly prohibited. Even personal items, such as watches and glasses, are subject to inspection.

According to visitors, prices in the store are quite high, and the selection is still limited. Diplomats are exempt from paying duties, while other foreigners are required to pay the full price of the goods.

It should be noted that in 1952, a ban on the import of alcohol was introduced in Saudi Arabia after a tragic incident that occurred a year earlier. At that time, 19-year-old Prince Mishari, the son of the founder of the kingdom, shot the host of a party at the residence of the British consul in Jeddah while under the influence of alcohol.

Recent changes in legislation are linked to the reforms of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who aims to attract more foreign tourists and businessmen while reducing the country's dependence on oil revenues. As part of these reforms, cinemas have also been opened, music festivals have been allowed, and women have been granted the right to drive.
