Afghanistan has closed its consulate in Khorog

According to reports, on December 15, the Taliban removed Consul Naqibullah Dehkonzoda from his position, coinciding with the closure of the consulate. As stated by "Asia-Plus," this information was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, which noted that this decision was made by the Afghan authorities.

The agency emphasized: "We are aware of this issue. According to international agreements, the decision to open or close consulates is made by the government of the country."

According to "Hashti Subh," Naqibullah Dehkonzoda began his activities in Khorog during the previous Afghan government. After the change of power, he established cooperation with the Taliban and reportedly transferred $120,000 to the Taliban's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dehkonzoda's dismissal occurred against the backdrop of rumors about his potential appointment as the new ambassador of Afghanistan to Tajikistan, replacing Mohammad Zahir Agbar, who previously held this position.

It is worth noting that in the fall of 2023, Mohammad Zahir Agbar reported the suspension of consulate activities due to a lack of financial resources. However, Dehkonzoda denied this information, stating that the consulate continues to operate and is under the control of the Taliban.

Nevertheless, the Tajik foreign ministry confirmed in February 2024 that the Afghan consulate in Khorog is not under the control of the "Taliban," and Tajikistan has not accredited representatives of the new authorities.

Thus, Tajikistan remains the only country in Central Asia without official political and diplomatic relations with the "Taliban." However, there has been an increase in contacts at the government level recently, which may indicate a possible improvement in relations between the two countries.
