The Phantom MK-1 robot, which was recently unveiled, is currently generating a lot of discussion. Foundation's production plans have become more ambitious since our last report: whereas the previous goal was to produce 10,000 units by 2026, the company is now aiming for 50,000 androids by the end of 2027, according to Forbes. Pathak intends to launch 40 robots this year and then ramp up production to 10,000 by 2026.

Although the plans to release 50,000 robots seem bold, Pathak explains that success lies in the successful acquisition of artificial intelligence and drive technologies, which has significantly accelerated the development process. Moreover, the company's team consists of experienced specialists who previously worked at Tesla, Boston Dynamics, SpaceX, and 1X. For instance, the production manager has previously focused on scaling production for the Tesla Model X and Model Y and developed a strategy to avoid excessive automation in the early stages.
Engineers working on the Phantom MK-1 have decided to forgo the use of lidars to simplify data processing. Instead, they have focused on standard cameras, which should enhance reliability in challenging conditions. The robot uses patented drives with cycloidal gearboxes that ensure quiet operation and durability, as well as allow for reverse movement. Various weaponry can be mounted in place of arms.

Foundation does not intend to sell its robots but plans to lease them for around $100,000 per year. Pathak emphasizes that the Phantom will not become a fully autonomous combat vehicle: the decision to use lethal force will remain with humans, as is done with combat drones. Mechanical soldiers will be able to perform complex ground operations, which should reduce reliance on airstrikes and heavy weaponry, thereby leading to a decrease in collateral damage.

However, Forbes notes that this could have the opposite effect. Eliminating risk for soldiers may make it easier for politicians to make decisions about the use of military force, which in turn could make military actions more likely.
