In Turkey, the Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army was killed in a plane crash

On Tuesday evening, an aviation accident occurred in Turkey: a business jet crashed, on board of which was the Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army, Mohammed Ali Ahmed Al-Haddad. Confirmation of his death came from the Prime Minister of Libya, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah.

The Turkish Minister of Internal Affairs, Ali Yerlikaya, reported on the social network X that contact with the Falcon 50 aircraft, registered under the number 9H-DFJ and which took off from Ankara at 20:10, was lost at 20:52. The wreckage of the aircraft was found by the gendarmerie two kilometers south of the village of Kesikkavak in the Haymana district.
According to Yerlikaya, before the loss of contact, a request for an emergency landing in the area was received from the aircraft. There were five people on board, including Al-Haddad.

Dbeibah noted that this tragedy is a heavy loss for the nation and all its citizens. "This happened after an official visit to Ankara, and we feel a tremendous loss," his statement is quoted.

Also on board were the commander of the Libyan ground forces, the director of military production, an advisor, and the chief of staff's photographer. The causes of the crash remain unclear.

The Government of National Unity in Tripoli has instructed the Minister of Defense to send an official delegation to Ankara to oversee the investigation of the incident.

Libya's Minister for Political Affairs, Walid El-Lafi, told the Libya Alahrar channel that the plane was rented in Malta, but there is insufficient information about its owner and technical condition.

In connection with the tragedy, the Libyan government declared three days of mourning. Earlier, the Turkish Ministry of Defense reported on Al-Haddad's visit, during which he met with Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler and other military leaders.

The crash occurred the day after the Turkish parliament approved a draft decree on the deployment of Turkish troops in Libya for a year. This decision was based on a request for military assistance from the UN-recognized government of Libya.

The country is divided between the east and west, where Turkey supports the government in Tripoli but is also strengthening contacts with the eastern part, controlled by the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar.

It is worth noting that in 2020, Turkey sent troops to Libya to support local forces and signed a maritime demarcation agreement, which is contested by Egypt and Greece. In 2022, a preliminary agreement was reached on the exploration of energy resources, which also provoked protests from neighboring countries.

Haftar expressed condolences over the tragic death of Al-Haddad, as reported by TASS.
