At the recent People's Kurultai, the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, emphasized the importance of the energy sector for ensuring the stability and national security of the country, as well as for its economic growth.

He noted that effective electricity supply to all settlements, including cities and villages, plays a key role in the operations of enterprises and in improving the quality of life for citizens. Japarov reminded that hydroelectric power stations built in the mid-20th century, such as the Toktogul HPP, had been in operation for over fifty years without major repairs, and their technical condition was extremely unsatisfactory when his team came to power.

Over the past four years, significant modernization of the energy infrastructure has been carried out in the country: four units at the Toktogul HPP have been upgraded, increasing its capacity by 240 megawatts, and 28 small hydropower plants with a total capacity of over 400 megawatts have been built. Had these measures not been taken, Kyrgyzstan would have faced much more serious electricity supply constraints than those the country is experiencing today. According to the president, the construction of nearly one hundred new hydropower plants and the modernization of existing ones, along with the use of solar and wind energy, create a solid foundation for the country's energy independence.

Japarov also mentioned the ongoing construction of a 1200-megawatt thermal power plant in Kara-Keche and the implementation of the "Kambar-Ata-1" project.

“The construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 HPP with a capacity of 1860 megawatts is the largest energy project in the history of our country. After the commissioning of this station, Kyrgyzstan will become a full-fledged exporter of electricity, which will not only meet domestic needs but also help ensure energy stability for neighboring states. This project embodies our national strength and economic independence, as well as the strategic future of Kyrgyzstan,” he added.

The president also noted that previously the republic was forced to purchase electricity from neighbors at inflated prices and then sell it to the population at significantly lower tariffs. This created multi-billion debts for the national energy system, which are gradually being reduced. Japarov expressed confidence that as early as next year, the energy sector will be able to operate without debts, allowing it to develop and form a stable revenue base.

“Energy is a resource that must be used rationally. We should turn on lighting and electrical appliances only when it is truly necessary to avoid unreasonable electricity consumption,” he concluded.
