Tazagul Karataeva, who lives in the village of Ming-Bulak, located on the border with Tajikistan, made a bold choice by leaving her job as a teacher. For the past ten years, she has been successfully engaged in beekeeping, which provides her with a stable income.
In an interview with a Turmush correspondent, Tazagul shared that her apiary consists of about 90 hives, although she started with just two. She has been involved in beekeeping for over a decade.
“The quality and quantity of honey collected directly depend on weather conditions. In high temperatures, flowers produce nectar poorly, while after rain and sunny weather, much more honey is collected, and it turns out to be of better quality. This year, the harvest was small, resulting in the price of honey rising to 800 soms per kilogram, whereas it used to cost 400–600 soms. Every year we go to the market, and local residents eagerly buy our products,” T. Karataeva said.
She also noted that she takes her bees to pastures in Ravat and Kara-Moynok and offers a variety of honey types, including products with additives such as apricot kernels, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, raisins, and dried apricots.
“The price for honey with additives is 700 soms per kilogram. Last year we sold one ton of honey, and this year we expect to collect about 500 kilograms,” she added.
Honey collection occurs twice a year—in June and August. In May, Tazagul takes the hives to the mountains and brings them back home in winter, taking care of them during the cold season. Bees can suffer from various diseases, such as diarrhea and brood diseases, so she conducts treatment and prevention. Tazagul has regular customers who buy 20–30 kilograms of honey at a time. Honey stores well, so its sales stretch throughout the year,” the beekeeper noted.
