Malik Shavaev, the current champion of Kyrgyzstan in freestyle wrestling, spoke about his roots and connection to this country.

The 29-year-old athlete from Russia became the national champion, winning a gold medal in the weight category up to 89 kg on December 24. In the tournament, he represented the city of Talas.

“My sports journey began in Russian wrestling. However, significant changes are happening in my career now: I will represent Kyrgyzstan, the country where my father was born. I want to express my gratitude to everyone in Kyrgyzstan, the Wrestling Federation, and the team for the warm welcome and trust. I promise to do my best to justify this trust,” he noted on his social media page.
