Dastan Sagynbek uulu, a 31-year-old resident of the village of Ak-Jar in the Talas region, is a defender on the team "Yntymak." A Turmush correspondent spoke with him to learn about his passion for kok-boru.
Dastan shared that he joined the team in 2019.
“My father was a ulakchi, and I have been passionate about horseback riding since childhood. I learned from more experienced players and soon became part of the team. In 2019, I was invited to 'Yntymak,' and since then I have been playing as a defender,” he said.
Although many consider this game dangerous, for us it has become routine. At first, it was just a hobby, but now, with the responsibility placed on us, we approach each match with seriousness. Before the game, my mother always blesses me, and my brothers help choose and prepare the horse. My wife was initially worried about my safety, but now she fully supports me after seeing how much I love this activity,” Dastan added.
During the games, various incidents can occur. Sometimes injuries lead to all our preparation being in vain. Once, during a game, there were disturbances due to misunderstandings among the fans, and we had to seek shelter in a barn with the horses. I am sure that this game is an integral part of our culture,” he said.
Dastan dreams that his son will continue his traditions. Although the boy is still small, he already shows interest in this sport. “They say that those who follow in their father's footsteps never stray from the path. I learned many secrets and tactics of the game from my father,” noted the defender.
In their family, Dastan and his wife are raising two children — a son and a daughter.
