A large coal open-pit mine has been opened in Batken, with an investment of $65 million.

Today, December 25, the opening of the coal pit "Sulyukta 11" took place in the Batken region, reports Turmush correspondent.

This enterprise was opened as a result of an agreement between OJSC "Kyrgyzkomur" and a Chinese industrial and trade company, which jointly invested 65 million dollars in the development of the coal deposit.

The area of the coal deposit is 863.1 hectares, of which 21.5 hectares are located within the city of Sulyukta, while 841.6 hectares are situated in the territory of the Kulundu rural area in the Leilek district. The coal reserves here are estimated at 82.7 million tons.

This project is aimed at stimulating the development of the region and creating over 400 jobs for local residents.

According to the technical project, it is planned to extract 900 thousand tons of coal per year, which will contribute to the development of the coal industry, enhance the country's energy security, and expand export potential.

As part of the social package, the Chinese company laid a capsule on October 7, 2025, for the construction of a new school for 250 students in Sulyukta, and work has already begun," the press release notes.

Previously, Turmush reported on the planned launch of a large coal deposit — Sulyukta Field No. 11, which has reserves of about 100 million tons. The area of this deposit is approximately 800 hectares.

In October 2023, during the official visit of the Premier of the State Council of China, Li Qiang, to Kyrgyzstan, several agreements were signed. The ceremony took place after extensive negotiations between the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov and the Premier of the State Council of China.

Among the signed documents was the Agreement on Joint Activities between the State Enterprise "Kyrgyzkomur" and LLC "Tomiris-Ken" for the joint development of the coal deposit "Sulyukta Field-11".

Sulyukta, known as the "stoker of Central Asia," has been mining coal for over 150 years. During the Soviet era, coal from this region was considered one of the best in terms of calorific value in the Union.

The total coal reserves in the Sulyukta deposit amount to 188 million 628 thousand tons, divided into categories (thousand tons): A-38338, B-38821, C1 – 106064, C2 – 5406.

The existing mines and pits can provide coal supplies for about 200 years at the current level of extraction.

Previously, the city mined about 300 thousand tons of coal per year, a significant portion of which was exported to Uzbekistan and other regions of Kyrgyzstan.
