The section of the Chu River, located in the rural district of Tömönkü-Chuy, requires urgent reinforcement of its riverbank.

The total length of the river is 53 km, of which 44.292 km are at risk of erosion. Currently, bank protection works have been completed over 8.708 km.

This information was presented during the working visit of the presidential envoy in the Chuy region, Azamat Osmonov, to the Tömönkü-Chuy district, located in the Sokuluk region.

According to the provided data, the water level in the Chu River has fluctuated over the years: in winter it rises to 50 cubic meters, while in summer it drops to 10 cubic meters. The strong current causes bank erosion up to 5 meters, creating a serious threat to agricultural lands, and in some cases, the water reaches the crops.

Representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations carry out bank protection works annually, delivering rock materials to the site. On average, they manage to reinforce between 500 meters to 1.5 kilometers of banks per year. However, current measures are not sufficient to prevent further erosion.

Following the visit, A. Osmonov instructed local divisions of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic to develop a detailed map plan of the sections of the Chu River that need reinforcement as soon as possible. This document should clearly outline priority and most vulnerable areas. There was also a task set to create a realistic phased action plan considering actual needs and potential risks.

Reinforcing the banks of the Chu River has been highlighted as a crucial task, as further inaction could lead to the loss of agricultural land and the emergence of emergencies.

During the visit, the head of the region inquired with representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations about how much funding had been allocated for bank protection works over the past five years.

According to the representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, in 2025, works were completed on three sections in Kamyshanovka: 33 million soms were spent on the first section, 28 million soms on the second, and 6 million 400 thousand soms on the third. Plans for 2026 also include reinforcing three more sections.

“There are extremely dangerous zones divided into 23 categories. They need to be reinforced as a priority,” the statement notes.
