Recent public hearings in Bishkek concluded with a discussion of a new general plan for the city's development, which is projected until 2050. The focus was on the capital's transport infrastructure.

Aleksandr Baranov, head of the "Transport Infrastructure" department at LLC "NIIPG," presented the results of the analysis of the current situation. According to him, about 40% of the main streets in Bishkek do not meet established standards. At the same time, 85% of the highways are overloaded, and 77% of them are parked, which reduces capacity by almost half.
Statistics show that the level of motorization in Bishkek continues to rise and is expected to reach 330 cars per thousand residents by 2024.
The specialist noted that public transport is facing serious difficulties: it is overcrowded, speed indicators are low, and some areas are not covered by routes at all.

At the entrances to the capital, the maximum passenger flow is currently recorded — up to 6,700 people per hour, which exceeds the capacity of bus services.

As part of the general plan-2050, extensive development of the transport system is planned. It is proposed to bring 333 kilometers of main streets into compliance with standards, build 299 kilometers of new roads, and 89 kilometers of bypass roads, including 49 kilometers of new ones. The construction of 18 transport interchanges and two overpasses over railway tracks is also planned.

Special attention is given to the development of public transport. The project proposes the creation of a tram line and the implementation of a rapid bus transit system (metrobus). The idea of building a metro was rejected because, according to Aleksandr Baranov, its implementation would be ten times more expensive than a tram network and would not be able to handle the projected passenger flows.
According to the developers' data, one modern tram can carry up to 220 passengers, which allows for the replacement of up to 180 personal cars on the streets of the city.
It is also planned to move transit transport outside the city by creating northern and southern bypasses, as well as an external ring for freight transport, including the transportation of hazardous goods. Within the city, the formation of auxiliary centers is planned, which will help reduce the need for trips to the city center.

Additionally, the project includes the development of an urban railway, the construction of additional tracks and transfer platforms, as well as the creation of bicycle infrastructure that will not conflict with automobile and public transport.

It is expected that the implementation of this general plan will increase the volume of public transport by 54%, ensure 100% coverage of the population by the route network, and significantly reduce the use of personal vehicles.
