In the village of Issyk-Kul (Mayak), located in the Issyk-Kul ayil district of the Tyup region, an unusual natural phenomenon occurred, as reported by local residents. They associate this with the cold typical of the winter season.

According to eyewitnesses, steam resembling fog formed over the lake.
Local residents note that this phenomenon is observed every year in the midst of winter. At this time, dense steam forms over the water surface. "The depth of the lake in our village exceeds 700 meters, so the water temperature remains relatively warm. With sharp changes in weather, steam appears over the lake, which can last from two to three days up to a week, until the air temperature stabilizes. This phenomenon is unique to our region, as in the village of Intymak, the lake depth is only 30 meters, and such an effect is not observed there," they say.

The term "frosty steam" actually refers to fog, rather than steam formation in the classical sense.

The water temperature in rivers and lakes does not drop below 0 °C even during winter frosts, which contributes to constant evaporation.

At the same time, cold winter air cannot hold a significant amount of water vapor.

When warm, moist air from the water meets the frosty air, moisture quickly condenses, forming tiny droplets or crystals. These droplets become visible, creating a dense fog that rises above the water surface.
