Due to the worsening weather conditions, hundreds of National Guard soldiers have been deployed in Mississippi and Tennessee to assist with road clearing, as well as to support motorists and residents left without electricity.
The National Weather Service has also warned of further cooling, caused by the movement of Arctic air to the southeast of the country. In Nashville, temperatures could drop to -10 °C, and with the wind chill, it could feel like -18 °C on Friday night. Authorities report closed sections of interstate highways I-55 and I-22 in northern Mississippi, as well as ongoing risks of icy conditions.
