Currently, nine out of 21 aimags, such as Uvs, Khovd, Zavkhan, as well as the central Övörkhangai and northern Selenge, are experiencing dzud conditions, according to a statement from the General Authority for Emergency Situations.

Dzud is a term that describes severe winter conditions when a significant number of livestock die due to extreme cold or because the ground is covered with snow.

Additionally, 16 aimags are facing weather conditions that are close to dzud, according to information from the emergency agency.

As of today, January 16, the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, has recorded minimum temperatures: at night -33...-36 degrees, and during the day -22...-28.

Animal husbandry is one of the key aspects of Mongolia's economy, providing nearly 40% of the livelihood for the nomadic population.

However, due to prolonged and harsh winters, many nomadic herders face livestock losses every year.

According to the National Statistical Office (NSO), at the end of 2025, the country had 58.1 million head of livestock.
