According to preliminary census data, there are 5.1 million horses in Mongolia, which is 9.5% more compared to the previous year.

The National Statistical Committee of Mongolia has presented the preliminary results of the latest livestock census.

According to preliminary data, the total number of livestock in the country currently stands at 58.1 million heads, which is a record figure. This information was provided by the National Statistical Committee of Mongolia.

By the end of 2025, the structure of livestock in Mongolia is expected to be distributed as follows: 5.1 million horses (an increase of 9.5%), 5.4 million cattle (an increase of 7.2%), 501.3 thousand camels (an increase of 4.3%), 23.9 million sheep (a decrease of 2.6%), and 23.2 million goats (an increase of 1.1%).

Five aimags with the largest number of livestock have also been identified. Leading is the Khuvsgul aimag with 5.3 million heads, followed by the Övörkhangai aimag with 5.1 million, the Arkhangai aimag with 4.4 million, the Bayankhongor aimag with 4.2 million, and the Töv aimag with 4.1 million heads of livestock.

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry reported that to meet the meat needs of the population of Mongolia, 14 million heads of livestock are required annually.

According to the National Statistical Office, at the end of 2024, there were 57.6 million heads of livestock in Mongolia. Thus, an increase in livestock is expected by 0.8% by 2025.
