The Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan has decided to ban the medical use and withdraw from sale a medication intended for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, as reported by TengriHealth.
The ban concerns the tablets "Desilmax" with the active ingredient sildenafil (dosage 100 mg, batch BSE92301A), which expire in July 2026. These tablets were produced by the Indian pharmaceutical company Macleods Pharmaceuticals Limited.
For reference: sildenafil, known as Viagra, was discovered and synthesized by Pfizer in 1989. It was initially studied as a treatment for cardiovascular diseases, but during clinical trials, its effectiveness in treating erectile dysfunction in men was found. In 1998, the drug was approved for medical use under the brand name Viagra.
The order for the ban was signed on February 11, 2026, by the chairman of the committee for medical and pharmaceutical control of the Ministry of Health.
According to the document, the drug is subject to withdrawal from pharmacies and medical institutions.
The reasons for the imposition of the ban are not specified in the order.
