According to Reuters, the decision to withdraw from the match was made due to concerns about the physical condition of 23-year-old Raducanu. This was supposed to be her first official match since October, as she prepares for the upcoming Australian Open.

Team captain Tim Henman noted that although Emma had been doing well in training and was close to stepping onto the court, it was decided not to risk her health. "It was a tough decision, but we believe that now is not the time for her return," Henman said in an interview with Australian broadcaster Nine.

While local media point to an injury as the reason for her withdrawal from the match, official details have not been disclosed. Nevertheless, Henman added that there is a possibility that Raducanu may still be able to play in the tournament later.

After her triumph at the US Open in 2021, Raducanu's career has been marred by various health and form issues. Last season, she managed to reach the quarterfinals in Miami, but she ended her season early due to physical discomfort.

The next match for the British team will be against the Greek team. Jack Draper is also absent from the team as he recovers from a left arm injury.

The Australian Open will begin on January 18 and run until February 1.
