In Kyrgyzstan, several solar power plants are set to begin operations in 2026. This was announced at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh by Deputy Minister of Energy Nasipbek Karimov.

During the discussion of amendments to the law "On Electric Power Industry," the deputies considered increasing the maximum capacity of electric and thermal stations from 30 to 50 megawatts. The Deputy Minister emphasized that the approval of this bill would open access to tax and customs benefits for a greater number of investors wishing to build power plants in the country.

In response to questions from parliamentarians, Nasipbek Karimov stated that hydropower plants account for over 95 percent of electricity production in Kyrgyzstan. However, he noted that the Ministry of Energy is actively working on the development of alternative energy sources.

“In December of last year, a solar power plant with a capacity of 100 megawatts was commissioned. The Ministry has agreements with 12 investors in the field of solar generation. For example, an investment agreement for 300 megawatts has been signed with the company OshOO 'Bishkek Solar,' and it is expected that 100 megawatts will be put into operation in 2026,” the deputy minister reported.

According to him, under an agreement with one of the investors for the construction of a solar power plant with a capacity of 1900 megawatts, it is planned that by May 2026, a part with a capacity of 150 megawatts will be launched, and by the end of the year — 450 megawatts.

Also, this year, as the official noted, another investor will begin the construction of a solar power plant with a capacity of 400 megawatts.

As a result of the discussion, the deputies supported the bill in the first reading.
