Iran has introduced a new toll collection system for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. According to the British shipping magazine Lloyd’s List, the authorities have established a safe route for tankers that have received the appropriate permits.

According to the publication, at least nine tankers have recently passed through the new corridor, which runs near the Iranian island of Larak. These vessels were within sight of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. In one instance, the operator of a vessel paid approximately $2 million for permission to transit the Gulf.

In the coming days, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is expected to develop a clearer procedure for issuing permits.

Dimitris Maniatis, the CEO of the maritime security company Marisks, noted: “Currently, the government and industry are working on creating a procedure that will allow vessels not linked to Israel or the U.S. to obtain confirmation for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.” He added that each request is currently being considered individually.

According to Lloyd’s List, the governments of several countries, including India, Pakistan, Iraq, Malaysia, and China, are negotiating direct transit of vessels with Tehran.
