Several human rights organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), have called on Kyrgyz authorities to immediately release journalist Mahabat Tajibek kyzy and to implement the recommendations of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
The journalist serves as the director of anti-corruption projects Temirov Live and Ait Ait Dese. She was arrested in January 2024 and in October of the same year received a six-year prison sentence on charges of organizing mass riots. On February 2, the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan is set to decide whether to reconsider her case. Human rights advocates insist on her immediate release, as well as compensation and an investigation into the circumstances of her arrest, should the court make a favorable decision.
It is also reported that her husband, Bolot Temirov, who is in exile, became the laureate of the CPJ International Press Freedom Award in 2025.
