The UN recognized the journalist's arrest as arbitrary
The hearing in the case of Mahabat Tajibek kyzy will take place on February 2, 2025, at 10:00 AM in the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic. The journalist, sentenced to six years for "calls for mass riots," has filed an appeal.
This petition was a result of the findings of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which stated that the arrest and detention of Tajibek kyzy do not meet international standards and are arbitrary.
The journalist's arrest occurred in January 2024, when she and her colleagues from the projects Temirov LIVE and "Ait, Ait dese" were accused of "calls for mass riots." In October 2024, the Lenin District Court of Bishkek sentenced her to six years in prison, and this sentence was later upheld by the Bishkek City Court and the Supreme Court.
It should be noted that Mahabat Tajibek kyzy is the mother of a minor child, but the court refused to grant her a deferral of the sentence, despite the possibility of doing so under national legislation.
In its assessment, the UN noted that the journalist's arrest was a direct result of her professional activities and her lawful right to freedom of speech. The Working Group called for the immediate release of Tajibek kyzy, compensation for wrongful detention, and an investigation into the actions of officials involved in her arrest.
The hearing will take place at: Toktobolota Abdymomunova St., 205, Bishkek.
