Sensation at the Winter Olympics: Gold won by a figure skater from Kazakhstan
At the 2026 Winter Olympics, held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Kazakh figure skater Mikhail Shaidorov won the gold medal in the men's singles event. This is the first gold in figure skating for Kazakhstan.

Shaidorov's performance was a true sensation for the audience, as he moved up from fifth place after the short program to take first place, surpassing all his competitors. This achievement marks the second gold medal for Kazakhstan at the Winter Olympics.

Mikhail Shaidorov became the first figure skater to perform a triple axel — quadruple toe loop cascade at the Olympic competition.

Shaidorov's total score was 291.58 points, of which he earned 92.94 points in the short program and 198.64 in the free skate. The silver medal was won by Japanese skater Yuma Kagiyama with a score of 280.06 points, while his compatriot Shun Sato took bronze with 274.9 points.

Mikhail Shaidorov is only 21 years old. He is the silver medalist of the 2025 World Championship and the winner of the Four Continents Championship in the same year. His coach is 1994 Olympic champion Alexey Urmanov.

Previously, Kazakhstan also won a bronze medal in figure skating when Denis Ten placed third at the Sochi Olympics in 2014.
