During the semifinal, Selie sustained an injury when her opponent's skate hit her in the area above her left eye. The athlete was immediately evacuated from the ice rink on a stretcher. Urgent stitches were applied to her at the arena, and she was then sent to the hospital for further examination.
This race also included Italian Arianna Fontana and American Kristen Santos-Griswold, who was disqualified by the judges for a dangerous overtaking maneuver that led to a collision.
Despite Selie's injury, Fontana managed to secure second place in the semifinal and advance to the final. Later, representatives of the Polish team reported that the athlete's eye was not harmed; however, this incident once again raised questions about the risks associated with injuries in short track speed skating.
