On January 31, 2026, an incident occurred at the gas tank of PT Vopak Terminal Merak in Cilegon, located in Banten province. According to preliminary information, there may have been a gas leak at the facility, which is situated in the Gerem area of the Grogol district.

Local media reported that residents of the surrounding areas began to panic when they saw thick orange smoke rising from the tank where chemical liquids are stored. Video recordings of the incident quickly spread across social networks, contributing to the dissemination of information about a possible leak.

The mayor of Cilegon, Robinsar, arrived at the scene and stated the need for a personal assessment of the situation to evaluate the impact on the population. Some residents reported difficulties in breathing.

The mayor demanded that PT Vopak conduct an urgent inspection, document information about the affected individuals, and take measures to ensure the safety of citizens. He also ordered an assessment of environmental and industrial safety levels to prevent similar incidents in the future. An environmental commission is expected to visit the site in the coming days.

According to authorities, the situation is under control, and an investigation into the causes of the incident is underway.
