- During the plenary session of the Jogorku Kenesh held on February 26, 2026, Deputy Dastan Bekeshev proposed the industrial cultivation of cannabis.

He noted that this plant could serve as raw material for the production of bags and clothing.

In response, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Zhanibek Kerimaliev commented that Dastan Bekeshev always demonstrates a creative approach.

The Deputy Minister added that it is more accurate to refer to this plant as industrial hemp to avoid confusion with regular hemp.

“Yes, you are right, this is indeed industrial hemp. Although the deputies here are laughing, this is actually a serious issue,” Bekeshev explained.

He also mentioned that industrial hemp could become an alternative for raw materials currently sourced from Turkey and China for the textile industry.

“For example, in the USA and European countries, you can see t-shirts and bags made from industrial hemp,” he added.

The Deputy Minister responded that at the moment the government does not plan to consider this proposal.

“We will study this idea, as it is known that quality military uniforms can be made from industrial hemp,” he noted.

This issue was raised in the context of discussing the draft law "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Kyrgyz Republic (to the laws 'On the Protection and Use of Plant Life' and 'On the Development of Agriculture in the Kyrgyz Republic')", which was presented for the first reading.
