A recent preparatory meeting for the Regional Environmental Summit of Central Asian countries (RES-2026) took place in Almaty from February 25 to 27, with active participation from delegates from Kyrgyzstan.

Representatives from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, as well as international organizations and partners such as UNDP, FAO, GIZ, UNEP, UNESCO, WWF, IUCN, and representatives of the secretariats of international conventions were also present at this event.

The participants focused on the formation of two interrelated regional initiatives – the "Green Shield" and "Harmony with Nature for Sustainable Development of the Region." These initiatives are planned to be presented and approved at RES-2026, including the signing of a declaration and resolutions.

Discussions also addressed important aspects of transboundary biodiversity conservation and the restoration of forest ecosystems, such as mountain forests, saxaul forests, and tugai forests. Participants emphasized the need to combat land degradation and desertification, as well as to develop a coordinated financing system for these initiatives.

Participants noted that Central Asia possesses unique natural capital, including the ecosystems of the Tian Shan and Pamir-Alai mountains, steppe and desert areas, as well as wetlands that are home to rare species such as the snow leopard, kiik, kulan, and argali. However, the region faces serious climate and environmental challenges that directly impact food and water security, the health of residents, and the resilience of infrastructure.

As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached on the need to refine project documents, clarify the logic of expected outcomes and coordination mechanisms, as well as the financial architecture, to ensure the practical implementation of decisions at RES-2026.
