January 2026 became a record month for the number of magnetic storms, setting a new maximum since 2017. According to the Solar Astronomy Laboratory at the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, magnetic storms were observed on 10 out of 31 days this month.

Since the beginning of 2026, there has been a trend indicating that it will become the most geomagnetically active year in the last decade. In January, the number of days with magnetic storms reached the highest level in the current 25th solar cycle, which is also a record since September 2017.

As expected, the main source of magnetic storms in January was coronal holes. An exception was a powerful magnetic storm that occurred from January 19 to 21, caused by a shock wave from a plasma cloud ejected by the Sun as a result of an X1.9 class flare on January 18.

As of now, only one magnetic storm has been recorded in the first week of February.
