Today, January 15, the parliament discussed in the second reading a bill concerning amendments to Article 137 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic "Torture." These amendments will allow for the prosecution of not only officials but also other employees, including medical workers.

Elvira Surabaldiyeva emphasized that doctors in Kyrgyzstan are already under enormous pressure.

She noted: "In our country, there is already a shortage of doctors. Graduates of KGMA are required to work for five years in state institutions. Will these changes lead to us being left without medical personnel?"

The Deputy Attorney General, for his part, claims that such a threat does not exist.

"There is no threat. If there have been cases of torture on their part, they have already been held accountable under other articles of the Criminal Code. This bill simply clarifies their status as subjects of this article," added the Deputy Attorney General.
