Chinese universities have changed the global academic hierarchy

The recent release of the Leiden Ranking has demonstrated significant changes in the global academic hierarchy. Research conducted by experts from the Netherlands shows that Harvard University, which has long held the top position, has now dropped to third place among the most productive scientific institutions.

Rising swiftly to the top of the ranking is Zhejiang University, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University has secured the second position. This sharp turn of events in higher education confirms the impressive progress of China, where eight out of ten universities are now in the top ten of the ranking.

Among the few Western representatives that have maintained a spot in the top 10 alongside Harvard is the University of Toronto. Experts note that such significant changes indicate not only an increase in the number of publications but also qualitative achievements in Chinese science, which is gradually displacing traditional leaders from the USA and Europe.

This new dynamic poses serious challenges for American universities and confirms the shift in focus of global intellectual production towards Asia.
