Problems at the borders existed even during the Soviet era, noted Abdykarim Alimbaev, head of the Border Service of the State National Security Committee, on January 14 during a broadcast on "Birinchi Radio."

Alimbaev cited examples of conflicts that occurred in the Batken region in 1974 and 1989, when citizens of neighboring republics became participants in disputes. The Soviet authorities responded in these situations by deploying military units to the specified areas, positioning them between the conflicting parties, imposing a curfew, and taking measures to stabilize the situation and reduce tension.
