Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, assured that the matches of the 2026 World Cup will be held in complete safety, despite recent acts of violence triggered by the death of the drug cartel leader.
As a result of a military operation, Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, who led the "Jalisco New Generation" cartel, was killed. This led to public order violations in some regions: armed groups blocked roads and attacked law enforcement agencies in the states of Jalisco and Michoacán. According to official reports, dozens of people died as a result of the clashes.
By the beginning of the week, the situation began to stabilize, and authorities reported a return to normal life in Jalisco, where Guadalajara will host four matches of the World Cup. Games are also scheduled at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and in Monterrey.
The 2026 World Cup will take place in Mexico jointly with the USA and Canada. The country's president emphasized that the government has all the necessary resources to ensure the safety of both spectators and participants in the tournament.
