In anticipation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino shared his thoughts on the current situation in Mexico. Amid recent military conflicts in the country, questions have arisen regarding the safety of the upcoming tournament.
“The situation has normalized, and everything is currently under control. We hope that the event will take place without incidents,” Infantino's words were reported by the Spanish publication AS.
A recent large-scale operation by Mexican security forces, during which Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, the leader of one of the most powerful drug cartels, was eliminated, has raised serious concerns in the international community. This event led to a series of clashes between criminals and law enforcement agencies. Although the main hotspots of conflict have been localized, a heightened patrol regime continues to operate in some states.
It is worth noting that the World Cup will take place in three countries: the USA, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. In Mexico, the tournament games will be held in cities such as Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara. The country will host 13 matches, among which particularly significant games will take place at the famous Azteca Stadium.
