According to Kazinform, citing TASS, the magnetic storms in January 2026 were the result of coronal hole activity.
The Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that this month saw a record number of days with magnetic storms, not observed since 2017.
Since the beginning of 2026, it can definitely be said that it will become one of the most active years in terms of geomagnetic activity in the last decade. January recorded 10 days with magnetic storms, which is the highest figure for the entire 25th solar activity cycle and the highest level since September 2017.
Coronal holes have been identified as the main source of these magnetic storms.
