On the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, 69 countries opposed the American proposal to exclude from the resolution the points concerning sovereignty and territorial integrity, while only 11 countries supported the US initiative.

On February 24, 2026, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution titled "Support for a Lasting Peace in Ukraine" with a result of 107 votes in favor. This decision marked an important step in restoring international support, which had fallen to 93 votes last year. Before the vote, the Assembly rejected the US attempt to remove the points on territorial integrity: 69 countries voted against, 61 abstained, and only 11 supported the proposal. Mongolia also chose to abstain.

Against the backdrop of the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine, which will soon enter its fifth year, and despite ongoing negotiations initiated by the US, the question of a ceasefire remains open. The recent vote in the General Assembly was a test of international unity in support of Ukraine's territorial integrity, despite pressure from Washington aimed at softening the wording to achieve a peace agreement with Russia.

The resolution was adopted with a result of 107 votes in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions.

The voting took place during the 11th emergency special session of the General Assembly. Support for the resolution was expressed by the majority of European countries, as well as Australia, Israel, Thailand, Mexico, Nigeria, and many others.

Opposition to the resolution came from Russia and its traditional allies, including Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Nicaragua, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Burundi, Eritrea, and Sudan.

Among the countries that abstained were the US, China, Brazil, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Hungary.

The text of the resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire, the exchange of prisoners of war, and the release of all civilians who have been unlawfully detained or deported. It also emphasizes the commitment to "the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders."

Before the vote, Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betza criticized the proposed changes. She noted that the points targeted by the US concern fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, including Ukraine.

Betza warned that softening or excluding these wordings could send "a very dangerous signal that these key principles could be reconsidered." She reminded that the call for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with international law had previously been supported by more than 141 UN member states.

"I want to express my gratitude to each of the 107 countries that supported Ukraine in the defense of life. The General Assembly adopted our resolution in support of a lasting peace, with clear calls for a complete ceasefire and the return of our citizens. These are the right and necessary actions. We will continue to actively work towards achieving peace together with our partners," said Volodymyr Zelensky.
