The suspension of the extradition is related to the activist's application for refugee status. The next hearing in the Emelyanova case is scheduled for February 27.
Yulia Emelyanova, a former employee of Navalny's headquarters, was accused in Russia in 2021 of theft related to an incident with a taxi driver in St. Petersburg. She denied all charges, claiming that the case was fabricated. Before the trial began, the activist left the country.
Emelyanova was detained on August 31 of last year at Almaty airport while she was in transit from Georgia to Vietnam. She was arrested based on Russia's request for her detention. On February 11, it became known that the Kazakh authorities intended to extradite her to Russia. Emelyanova is currently being held in a pre-trial detention center in Almaty.
In addition, recently, the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan also suspended the extradition of Chechen activist Mansur Movlaev, keeping him in custody for another month to resolve his refugee status.
