A fire at the historic Vondelkerk church started shortly before 01:00. According to reports from the Dutch broadcaster NOS, no injuries have been reported as a result of the incident. However, due to flying debris caused by a breeze, residents of nearby homes were evacuated and temporarily housed in a yoga studio.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema visited the scene to assess the situation.

The cause of the fire, which occurred in a building that began construction in 1872, is still unclear. Local residents suspect that fireworks may have been launched at the tower, but this theory has not yet been confirmed by firefighters.

A significant crowd gathered at the scene, which in some cases hindered emergency services' access to the fire's source.

The Vondelkerk church was used as a Catholic place of worship until 1977, and now, according to the municipality of Amsterdam, serves as a venue for various celebrations.
