As a result of clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, 39 people have died

According to Khmer Times, since the beginning of hostilities, the number of civilian casualties has risen to 18, with reports of 78 injured. The ministry noted that around 450,000 people, including 240,000 women and 130,000 children, have been forced to leave their homes in the border areas.
According to Nation Thailand, in the latest escalation, four more Thai soldiers have died, bringing the total military casualties to 21. At the same time, Thai media reported that a temporary lull had settled in some areas of the border on the evening of December 17. However, the following morning, Thai forces carried out airstrikes on several areas in Cambodia.
Historical context of the Thai-Cambodian dispute
The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has been ongoing for decades, dating back to the colonial period when the boundary line was established by the French. The first serious escalation of the conflict occurred in 2008 when Cambodia attempted to include an 11th-century temple located in the disputed area on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Despite a ceasefire declared in October, hostilities resumed on December 7, with both sides accusing each other of escalating the conflict. As a result of these clashes, 39 people have died, and hundreds of thousands of residents have been evacuated from border areas.
U.S. President Donald Trump reported on December 12 about the results of his negotiations with the leaders of both countries, during which an agreement was reached for a ceasefire. In response, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that military actions would continue until the threat to the country's security and its citizens was eliminated.
