According to information published by Axios, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a plan to seize or blockade the island of Kharg, located in the Persian Gulf. This island is critically important for Iranian oil exports.

Sources indicate that discussions about a potential seizure of Kharg are aimed at pressuring Iran to normalize shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, although a final decision on this matter has not yet been made.

The publication notes that before conducting the operation, the U.S. may attempt to weaken Iran's military capabilities in the region. One source mentioned that this process could take about a month, after which control over the island could become an important tool in negotiations.

Additionally, the operation is expected to require an increase in U.S. military forces in the area. As Axios reports, U.S. Marine units may be sent to the Middle East in the coming weeks. Reuters also mentions that this scenario is being considered as a way to increase pressure on Tehran.

However, former U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery expressed concerns that the operation to seize Kharg could put American servicemen at unjustifiable risk, given the uncertainty surrounding a peace agreement with Iran under the Trump administration.

Previously, Axios claims, the U.S. had already conducted strikes on military facilities in Kharg, but the oil infrastructure was not damaged. Reuters also reported that despite these attacks, oil production and exports from Iran continued without interruption.
