According to Hogarth, only a few dozen baby flying foxes were able to be saved. They were found by volunteers clinging to their dead mothers.
The specialist noted that many adult individuals could not survive the extreme heat, especially in the hottest parts of the colonies, such as trees with insufficient foliage and on the scorched ground along rivers.
This incident has become the largest since 2018, when more than 70,000 flying foxes died. According to the publication, temperatures in the region fluctuated between 40 and 45°C for several days.
