With the arrival of December, many start preparing for the holidays, and the first step is choosing a New Year tree. We visited tree markets and stores to find out how much this symbol of the New Year costs this season.

The minimum price for artificial fir trees starts at 4,000 soms, while live trees can be purchased from 5,000 soms. Compared to last year, prices have increased by 20-30 percent, and in some cases, the difference between live and artificial firs is almost imperceptible.

Prices for live fir trees

This season, live fir trees have become more expensive again. In Bishkek stores, you can find both firs and blue or Tian Shan spruces. Sellers report high demand for coniferous trees before the New Year — up to seven trees are sold per day.

A one-meter Tian Shan fir costs about 3,000 soms, a one-and-a-half-meter tree will cost 8,000, and for a two-meter tree, you will have to pay more than 15,000 soms.

Prices for live trees in nurseries range from 3,000 to 70,000 soms and higher, depending on the species, height, and density. In some cases, delivery may be included in the price. Sellers note that compared to last year, prices have increased by 2,000 soms.

Such trees are sold in pots or with a root ball, and after the holidays, they can be planted in your yard.

Caring for a live fir tree in a pot

If you decide to buy a fir tree in a pot and plan to plant it, there are a few important points to remember. First, it is better to make the purchase 5-7 days before New Year's Eve. After buying, do not immediately bring the fir tree into the house; it is better to leave it in the hallway or on the balcony for a few days.

When the fir tree is in warmth, it needs to be watered — for a tree one meter tall, about 3 liters of settled water will be required. If the fir tree stays indoors until mid-January, watering should be repeated after ten days.

It is important to place the tree away from heat sources, such as fireplaces or radiators.

Artificial fir trees

In Bishkek, the selection of artificial fir trees is impressive in its variety. There are options for every taste and budget. Artificial trees can be just as beautiful as live ones, but their price can sometimes be quite high.

Artificial fir trees can be found almost everywhere, but do not rush to buy the first one you see. It is better to take your time to find and choose the most suitable option.

Small trees 70-80 cm tall cost from 2,000 to 3,000 soms, making them ideal for offices or kitchens. Both standard green trees and various options, such as pink ones with a coating, are available.
Prices for artificial fir trees range from 4,000 to 30,000 soms, depending on height, density, and quality.
Cheap options may not last long, as the coating of artificial snow and needles can quickly shed. It is better to spend a little more and buy a quality product that will last for several years.

It is recommended to buy artificial fir trees in specialized stores rather than at markets, as the quality of goods at the market may be questionable. In case of defects, it will be easier to return the product to a store than to the market.

Fire safety

A decorated tree brings joy to everyone, but improper installation can lead to a fire. Both live and artificial trees can pose dangers, as the latter are made from flammable materials that emit toxic substances when burned.

To avoid trouble, fire safety rules should be followed when installing the tree. In case of a fire, it is essential that the tree does not obstruct the evacuation of people, and it is better to cover a burning artificial tree with a thick blanket than to try to extinguish it with your hands.

In case of fire, immediately call the emergency service at numbers 101 or 112.

Interesting facts about fir trees

A fir tree is not always a fir. In different countries, not only firs but also spruces, pines, and even junipers are used as New Year trees — they have different needles and aromas.

The smell of needles helps relieve stress. The essential oils released by a live fir tree contribute to relaxation and create a cozy atmosphere, as confirmed by aromatherapy studies.

Decoration traditions are changing. Previously, trees were decorated with nuts, apples, and candles, while glass ornaments appeared only in the 19th century.

A fir tree can "drink" water. In a warm room, a cut tree can absorb up to a liter of water per day.

The tallest New Year tree was installed in Mexico, reaching a height of over 110 meters.

Fir trees can live for hundreds of years. In the wild, some firs can live up to 300-500 years.

Needles do not renew every year. The needles of a fir tree can remain green for 5-7 years.
