On Friday, a passenger vessel capsized in Yobe State in northeastern Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of 25 people, reports Kazinform, citing information from Anadolu Ajansı.
According to the Secretary-General of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, Mohammed Goje, the incident occurred the night before when the vessel, traveling from Yobe State to Jigawa, overturned on the river near Nguru.
Goje noted that rescue services were able to pull 13 people from the water; however, the fate of 14 passengers remains unknown, and they are considered missing. Search and rescue operations are ongoing at the site of the tragedy.
In Nigeria, where such incidents with vessels are not uncommon, a ban on the operation of unregistered vessels has been in place since September 10, 2025, in order to reduce the number of accidents.
