IFJ: In 2025, 128 journalists were killed worldwide

The number of journalist deaths has increased compared to the previous year

In 2025, according to data from the International Federation of Journalists, the number of journalists killed worldwide reached 128, of which 10 were women. The organization expressed its dissatisfaction with the insufficient protection of media workers by authorities, publishing relevant statistics on its website.

This statistic includes nine cases that occurred as a result of accidents. For comparison, in 2024, 122 journalist deaths were recorded, including 14 women.

IFJ President Anthony Bellanger noted that the increase in deaths compared to 2024 raises serious concerns among journalists.

The organization also condemned the "persistent failure of authorities to ensure the protection of media workers" and called for "urgent and decisive measures to end the cycle of violence and impunity in 2026."

The IFJ statistics on killed journalists differ from the data provided by "Reporters Without Borders" (RSF). According to this NGO, 67 journalists were killed in 2025 while performing their duties, whereas UNESCO estimates this figure to be 93.
