On December 26, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social account that the United States conducted a "powerful and deadly" strike against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in northwestern Nigeria. Trump noted that these terrorists had ruthlessly killed innocent Christians for many years.

The White House leader added that he had previously warned ISIS about the consequences if they did not cease their actions against Christians. "Tonight they faced punishment," he stated, emphasizing that "under my leadership, our country will not tolerate radical Islamic terrorism."

In early November, Trump mentioned possible military measures in Nigeria, including the deployment of troops and airstrikes. In December, he also imposed a partial travel ban to the U.S. for citizens of that country.

According to CNN, several high-profile mass killings on religious grounds occurred in Nigeria in 2025. In April, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu reported an attack by militants on a Christian community, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 people. In June, according to human rights activists, more than 100 people fell victim to an attack in the predominantly Christian village of Yelwat.
