The driver of former world champion Joshua has been charged after a car accident in Nigeria

In the magistrate's court in Sagamu, charges have been brought against 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode following a road incident involving Anthony Joshua, the former world boxing champion.

According to the BBC, Kayode was driving the car in which Joshua was present.
Local media reports indicate that the accident occurred due to speeding by the driver of the SUV that contained the boxer. The vehicle lost control and collided with a truck parked on the roadside. The athlete sustained minor injuries; however, unfortunately, two other individuals in the car died — they were close friends of Joshua and members of his team.

Witnesses reported that the convoy consisted of two vehicles — a Lexus and a Toyota Pajero. At the moment of the collision, there were four people in the Lexus. One passenger sitting next to the driver died on the spot. Witnesses immediately provided assistance to the injured and stopped passing vehicles until emergency services arrived.

On December 19, Joshua fought an exhibition match against popular blogger Jake Paul in Miami, which ended in a technical knockout in the sixth round in favor of the British boxer. This defeat marked the second for Paul in his career, where he currently has 12 victories. Joshua has 28 wins and four losses to his name.

Eddie Hearn, head of Matchroom Boxing, commented on rumors that the fight between Joshua and Paul was staged.

Hearn emphasized that the fight was real:

“Everything was 100% real. There were no pre-agreed strategies or scripts. Anthony aimed to land a precise punch as early as possible, but he only managed to do so in the sixth round.”

The promoter added that the consequences for Jake Paul were serious:

— the blogger has a broken jaw in two places;

— there is a risk that he may not return to boxing.

Anthony Joshua is a former world champion in the heavyweight division according to the IBF (2016—2019, 2019—2021), WBA (2017—2019, 2019—2021), WBO (2018—2019, 2019—2021), and IBO (2017—2019, 2019—2021) titles. He has defeated nine fighters for the heavyweight championship title. The summer of 2025 marked a time for him to undergo elbow surgery, which became necessary after his defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
